PhotoEssay of Kayaking the Des Moines River
by Gerry Rowland of Des Moines IA

Icy river December 1998
Ancient Hills, New Ice

Looking upstream from the Hwy. 169 bridge.
The ice of the Des Moines Lobe glacier carved the river valley from limestone millions of years old. New ice returns and forces the Kayaker to portage to the old Humboldt dam. The Cottonwood Trail is to the right.

December 1998
Rapids Optional

The old Humboldt dam stands at the southern end of the Cottonwood Trail. One can put in above the rapids for a dangerous ride, or put in below the rapids and paddle through the fast water that waits downstream. Prepare to see eagles.
P.S. I went around, not over.
