December 19, 1998 Launched, but Lingering This was a difficult launch. I had to lay out on the boat, with my legs in frigid water up to my waist. The winter gear kept me dry and warm, and I lingered to enjoy the view of the Hotel Manning, a landmark in this city built just 5 years after the first Dragoons explored the river in 1835. |

December 19, 1998 This was my last look at calm water for several hours. I turned into a 25 mile per hour wind, waves 1-2 ft. high, and paddled my heart out. The Scupper Pro cut bravely through the waves, but the river took me north and away from Bentonsport. I gradually worked my way to the end of the Great Bend, accompanied by numerous eagles. |
