December 19, 1998 S.S. Enrich Iowa Steams up to the Historic District, Bentonsport. Between 1840 and 1860, hundreds of steamboats came through the locks at Bonaparte and moored at this site. It was quite a thrill to make the river passage to this historic river town. I felt I had earned my fudge and my trip to the general store, where I purchased an 1846 map of Iowa. |

December 19, 1998 With the wonderful restored iron truss bridge as a background, the tow cars enjoy a moment of peace at the Bentonsport boat ramp. There was still 5 miles of paddling to go, down to Bonaparte, which I finished by 2 pm. This completed a journey of 400 miles, 160,000 paddle strokes, in 40 trips over a 15 month stretch. |
