Not Your Typical Iceboat
Jan. 22, 1999
2 miles south of downtown Des Moines

After more than a month of being frozen out of the river, I found the ice melted back nearly to the shore at SE 14th St. I sat in the boat and scooted across the ice with some trepidation, only to find the water just a few inches deep as I launched out for a short paddle upstream. Better safe than sorry, though.
