Everybody in the Water!!
Feb. 6-7, 1999

What a difference a few weeks of warm weather can make. Sycamore Access, 8 miles north of Des Moines, glistens in the February sun. Boaters admire the mirror-images of trees and bridges, while the last snows bask in the strange winter sunlight. Make no mistake, the water is freezing cold, as I discovered when I got launched.

Shorts, No Sleeves, and Buff
Feb. 6-7, 1999

Some sun-loving kayakers caught a few rays and paddled from Sycamore north to the Saylorville spillway. I felt strange in my layers of wetsuits, but I had acres of freezing water to navigate, and I was quite comfortable and safe.
