The incredibly reflective winter water surface turned a stark greenbelt into visual delight. Nowhere was the play of light, trees and water more striking than at this bend in the river just north of I-80.

About 3 miles into this peaceful wilderness paddle, the jarring sound of engines gives way to the sight of an endless stream of cars and enormous trucks hovering over billowing waves on clouds of concrete. Somehow, this awful intrusion into the harmonies of nature heightens the appreciation of the sights and sounds of wilderness that quickly drown out the intruders as one slips gently downstream.
