Close up, the bridge and the water weave a reflective tapestry of complex shapes that foreshadow the urban landscape that awaits the paddler. The Botanical Center is the take out point well above the incredibly dangerous Center St. Dam. Portage to the Simon Estes Amphitheater and enjoy urban paddling along a Neo-Roman waterfront.

Boxcar Bonanza

The browns and blues of the river in winter welcome the bright colors of the train on the bridge about 3 miles south of Des Moines. This shot was made ever so much easier in that the train was parked. The ice chunks that filled the river were light and fluffy, almost as though whipped in a blender.
