PhotoEssay of Kayaking the Des Moines River

In Search of the C-46 Bridge
Feb. 13, 1999

This flight of Canadian geese is no doubt looking for the bridge, which was utterly removed from the earth last fall. The road runs right up to the water on either side. There is no trace of the bridge, which I thought was quite attractive. This area is about 5 miles south of Des Moines, and is a good put-in point for a run to Hartford (18 miles downstream).

The New Bridge on the Block
Feb. 13, 1999

This is the new Hwy. 65 bridge near Pleasant Hill, about a mile from the old bridge that was unceremoniously plucked from the river. Vandalia Road runs through the loess hills to the east and south.
