Too Close for Comfort

These geese let me get much closer than the elusive eagles, but this was closer than they cared to be. Their taking flight is a noisy, honking affair, all the more awesome when several thousand participate in the mystery of a mass ascension.

Left Turn to Nowhere
Feb. 13, 1999

Some 8 miles from Des Moines, the river turns sharply to the south and disappears from view. A tributary appears to be the river, but the swift current soon reveals the true channel. The forest along the river is many miles deep, and it is a treat to see the houses along the bluffs.
