PhotoEssay of Kayaking the Des Moines River

Not Your Average Boat Ramp
Feb. 13, 1999

The Yellow Banks boat ramp is accessed by a very steep road down the loess hills. Last winter, I paddled past the ramp when it was covered with snow, and was alerted to my mistake by my GPS. I then had to pull the kayak up the snowy road to get back to my bicycle. This winter's trip was much less dramatic, and I had a tow car waiting. I felt almost lazy having it so easy.

Iowa is truly the beautiful land. You stand on a boat ramp, turn your head, and this natural splendor jumps out and smacks you right in the eye.
