I stopped at the Battle of Athens site on my way back to Farmington, just 4 miles north on Hwy. 81. At this lovely site, the turning point of the battle took place as Unionists held against Rebels fighting to push them into the river.

The main clash took place here in the center of town. There are still holes from cannon balls in some of the houses. This is a State Park, with excellent facilities.
