It Pays to Stop and See the Historic Sights . . . May 18-19, 1999 I stopped at the Battle of Athens site on my way back to Farmington, just 4 miles north on Hwy. 81. At this lovely site, the turning point of the battle took place as Unionists held against Rebels fighting to push them into the river. |

The preserved battle site at Athens, Missouri . . . The main clash took place here in the center of town. There are still holes from cannon balls in some of the houses. This is a State Park, with excellent facilities. |
