PhotoEssay of Kayaking the Des Moines River
by Gerry Rowland of Des Moines IA

Croton, Iowa, Where History Converges . . .
May 18-19, 1999

Directly across the river from Athens is Croton, where the Union maintained a railroad depot and supplied the Missouri Unionists across the river. Cannon balls from the battle fell here, and it was a crossing point on the Mormon trail. I think a bridge should be built to connect the two towns.

Back on the River by 9 AM. . .

Approaching the high bluffs of Shimek State Forest, near Turkey Run Access. The current is running strong, but a head wind keeps my speed down to 5 mph. The bank to the right is Missouri.
