Return

September 14, 1998

Dear Dear Mom and Dad,

I had a good row Saturday, about 19 miles with little current.

The little tow car is super.  I left home at 11:30, dropped off the tow car about 25 miles south at Bennington, one of the ramps I scouted this summer.

I paddled from Yellowbanks Park.  I stopped just a few times, and got back to Bennington ramp right at 8, just as it was getting dark.  The river is beautiful in the twilight, shimmering with trees and multi-colored rock formations on the silvery surface.  I recovered the van at Yellowbanks, and was home by 10 pm.  I also got to say hello to the park ranger, who helped me recover the boat last winter and remembered the experience.

This was a fine heron trip.  The water is low in many places, with sandbars at every turn.  There was even a quacking heron.  This is perfect paddling weather, and there were only a few boats out, so once again the river is MINE.  It was fun to pass by the Hartford access and the Runnells bridge, which were destinations of difficulty in years past.

I was Mr. sore arms Sunday, but better today.

One of the Davenport friends was here for the weekend, so MJS had a chance to get caught up and see a movie. We all went out for brunch on Sunday, and saw pictures of Norfolk harbor and the women's  service memorial at Arlington...most impressive.

I give my best to you.

Love,

Gigs and Megs
