Winter Heron, December, 1997

December 18, 1997

Great kayaking it was yesterday. I went 5 miles upstream, and 5 miles back, in 3 hours.
At the end, the lavender sky and the pink and white sunset were reflected in the river.
The trees on either side were reflected to their full height, and I paddled between the
trees. I also paddled around quite a few chunks of ice.

It was dark as I neared the Prospect St. ramp, but the water was still full of trees and
stars. I saw an object that looked like a great blue heron, but it was perfectly still. You
know that the heron is my guardian, so I had to paddle over. At about 20 feet away, it
looked like a log, and was absolutely still. About 15 feet away, the "log" spread out its
great wings and took flight right in front of me...a magnificent sight.

So, my feet got a little cold this trip, and the water is getting much colder, but it has been
awesome to be on the river in November and December.
