Saylorville, September, 1997

Return to Main Page September 23, 1997

I got out for a good long row on Sunday, up to the Saylorville dam.  Even though the river is low, there is still a pretty good current.  I had a strong wind at my back, so I got upstream in about an hour and a half  (about 4 miles).  There is one point where there are rapids and shallow water, and I got hung up on a log.  I had to get out and walk.  It was great fun running those rapids on the way back, and I stayed away from the shallow area.

It was cat in the hat time, so I got lots of waves from kids and smiles from adults.  It was just a gorgeous day, 65 and sunny, and the water is still warm.  I'll be sad when the cold weather sets in . . . I may have to invest in a wet suit for cold weather kayaking.
